Crochet

This is Lydia again. I know Jennifer will probably post again tomorrow, but for now I wanted to share my exciting (to me) news...

I learned how to crochet tonight!

My mother's been asking to teach me for years, so did my grandmother (who passed in May 2010) but I remember how I clashed with my mother when she taught me cross-stitch. Oh dear, was that horrible! I had no patience (hm, I still really do not have much patience) and we both ended up arguing so terribly that neither of us spoke to the other for hours. Trust me, for us, that's something.

So a friend taught me. You might have read her blog, The Modest Peacock where she posts all sorts of creative tidbits. She's a walking fount of artistic knowledge!!! She has shown me the basics and been very patient with my repeated questions.

I'm using one of my grandmother's crochet needles (if that's what they're called--I have a lot to go in learning all of this!) so I think she would be pleased. Sometimes, working on this, I've heard her voice in the back of my mind encouraging me and instructing. I must be remembering the lessons she taught me long ago, and only now am pulling it out now that I'm doing this.

Even if it's only my imagination, it feels good to be doing something grandma wanted me to do!

  1. Good for you. It is never too late to learn something new/old. My dear gran tried so hard to teach me to knit and eventually gave up. Years later I bought a book called "learn to knit" and taught myself. You are right, the old lessons came to mind and were a great help in assisting the process. We will be anxiously awaiting photos of your new success.

  2. What a sweet post. I miss crocheting. My grandmother taught me when I was @ eight. I haven't made anything in about ten years though. Thank you for adding my blogfest badge to your sidebar. I look forward to visiting again!

  3. I found you through Sylvia Ney just now.

How lovely! Brings back memories. My mother taught me how to crochet a long, LONG time. I remember I crocheted a very large green doilie. She also tried to teach me how to tat, but that I was never able to figure out. I never knew anyone except my mother who tatted.

  4. Congratulations! My Grandma taught me to crochet when I was about 12, I think. I remember a pink varigated piece - my first attempt after Grandma's instructions had sunk in. She praised it, then immediately ripped it apart. I was mortified! She had me redo the piece, this time it was more to her satisfaction. I still feel her, silently watching, as I crochet stitch after stitch. Would this meet with her approval? If not, I rip it apart and start over! My work is better for it. I, too, have one of Grandma's hooks...one of my treasures!

As will all things, practice makes perfect. The longer you work at it, the better it will be!
